On March 16, under the order of the state government, the 8-million population San Francisco Bay Area became the first region of compulsory home sequester in North American during the COVID-19 pandemic. To the residents, this may have been the most significant change to their daily lives since World War II, whereas this is a required course of Buddhist practices for the followers of the DDM San Francisco Bay Area Center.

On Sunday, May 17, 2009, Venerable Guo Xing, Abbot of CMC and Dharm Drum Retreat Center gave a talk entitled, "How Do You See People?"

On Friday, May 1, 2009, CMC presented "The Truman Show" as part of Movies and Mind, where films are screened and discussed from a Buddhist perspective. Truman (or "True-Man"), the protagonist, is living in a reality television show, complete with placement ads, and is the only person who doesn't realize it.
On Friday, April 3, 2009, CMC presented "Why has Bodhi-Dharma Left for the East" as part of "Movies and Mind", where films are screened and discussed from a Buddhist perspective.

On 9 May 2009, DDM Sydney hosted the Vesak celebration at the DDM Sydney Chan Hall at Campsie. Thirteen participants gathered together to celebrate the Birth of the Buddha.
On three consecutive Saturdays, March 7, 14, and 21, 2009, Dr. David Slaymaker taught a class on introductory concepts in Buddhism, titled, "Dharma 101: The Four Noble Truths" at CMC. The class was based on Master Sheng Yen’s booklet, "Setting in Motion the Dharma Wheel". Dr. Slaymaker used an interactive and experiential approach to teaching this subject.

Over the 2009 Easter break, DDM Sydney held its first combined 4 and 7 day retreat for the year.
On Sunday, March 1, 2009, Harry Miller, who studied with Master Sheng Yen for over 30 years, gave a talk at CMC entitled, "Living the Heart Sutra: What's an Ordinary Sentient Being to Do?" Handouts on the structure of the Heart Sutra, a literal translation of the sutra based on the Chinese, and a commonly known version of the sutra were distributed to the audience.
On Sunday, April 12, 2009, Bill Wright gave a dharma talk entitled, "Bodhidharma and the Spirit of Chan", based on the booklet, "In the Spirit of Chan" written by Master Sheng Yen. This booklet is a summary of the origins of Chan and Chan theory and practice based primarily on the teachings of Bodhidharma.

On Sunday, March 29, 2009, Dr. Rikki Asher gave a talk entitled, "What's a Mudra? Understanding Buddhist Art" at CMC.

On January 25, 2009, CMC celebrated New Year's Eve with a talk by the Most Venerable Master Ren Jun, who presented the following poem.
