On March 16, under the order of the state government, the 8-million population San Francisco Bay Area became the first region of compulsory home sequester in North American during the COVID-19 pandemic. To the residents, this may have been the most significant change to their daily lives since World War II, whereas this is a required course of Buddhist practices for the followers of the DDM San Francisco Bay Area Center.

On the evening of 12 July 2009, the Abbot President Venerable Guo Dong arrived at the Town Hall of Downtown Flushing in New York to make a public speech entitled "The Dignity of One's Life". It attracted nearly three hundred people.

The Abbot President of Dharma Drum Mountain, Venerable Guo Dong, initiated the 2009 Dharma Tour in Northern America on 1 July 2009. He gave out warmest blessings on their first stop in Vancouver on behalf of the DDM Sangha Community.

On 22 May 2009, Vice Provost of Chan Practice Center, Venerable Guo Yuan and Venerable Chang Qin of the Lamp Transmission Department commenced their 10-day Dharma tour in Malaysia.

On Friday, June 5, 2009, Venerable Guo Ru, first disciple of Master Sheng Yen, gave a lecture at CMC entitled, "Huatou Chan Meditation: The Way of the Ancestor Masters".
On Sunday, May 31, 2009, Venerable Chang Ji gave a talk entitled, "Your Planet Needs You: UNite to Combat Global Warming" at CMC. The talk was based on Venerable’s attendance of a recent conference at the UN with the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) and focused on the issue of climate change.
On Sunday, May 3, 2009, the Most Venerable Master Ren Jun gave a talk at CMC to commemorate the Buddha's Birthday. Before the talk, ten children greeted the Most Venerable Master with ceremonial bows and flowers.
