DDM Thailand Awards Scholarships as a Seed of Compassion

Accompanied by Dharma Drum Mountain’s followers, Venerable Guo Jian arrived in Chiang Rai of northern Thailand on 12 and 13 May 2007 to award scholarships to fifty-six students from disadvantaged families as a fulfillment of Venerable Master Sheng Yen’s inspirational compassion in supporting education for minority students.

In the ceremony, Venerable Guo Jian used the Master’s words: ‘those who give selflessly are blessed; those who do good deeds are happy,’ inspiring the scholars to continue studying diligently in the future.

Motivated by Venerable Master Sheng Yen’s compassionate wish to promote the education of disadvantaged students, DDM Thailand planned a tour of two local Chinese schools, Guanfu High School and Datong High School, in Chiang Rai City in northern Thailand. These two schools have nurtured many talented students from the local Chinese communities in Thailand.

There are more than 50 Chinese language schools in Chiang Rai, some of which are located in remote and mountainous areas. Students from Chinese communities in Chiang Rai attend school for Thai education during daytime, attending Chinese language schools at nights and on weekends.

In addition to awarding scholarships totaling 95,000 baht to fifty-six students from poor families in Chiang Rai City, DDM Thailand also donated 20,000 baht and 15,000 baht to Guanfu High School and Datong High School respectively, as an encouragement for their educational development.

DDM Thailand plants such seeds of merit in Chinese schools to further disseminate Venerable Master Sheng Yen’s great compassion across Thailand.
