On 28 October, Abbot President of Dharma Drum Mountain Venerable Guo Dong was invited to the DDM Tallahassee Chan Center in Florida by Associate Professor Yu Yong-Fong from the Department of Religion at Florida State University, where he led the refuge-taking ceremony. Approximately 100 attendees were present to listen to the teachings of the Abbot President and about 40 of them took refuge to be disciples of the Three Jewels. Participants were almost all Americans, a testament to the universal nature of this splendid ceremony.

Venerable Guo Xing, Abbot of the Dharma Drum Retreat Center and the Chan Meditation Center in New York, graciously accepted an invitation from our Chan Meditation Community at 401, Burrard to give a presentation on the science behind meditation practice. Twenty-six of our colleagues from Environment Canada, CEAA and Fisheries and Oceans Canada gathered to enjoy his lunchtime presentation on Thursday, September 5.
Venerable Guo Fang gave a series of lectures on the Method of Pure Land at DDM Vancouver Center from September 24th to October 2nd. In spite of the wet and chilly climate in the evenings in early fall of Vancouver, the topic still attracted approximately fifty people to the lectures.
The DDM Buddhism Information Centre in Malaysia (DDMBICM) and Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia (YBAM) jointly hosted a two-day Compassionate Samadhi Water Repentance Dharma Assembly on August 17th and 18th at Yuk Chai auditorium, Petaling Jaya, attended by approximately 500 audience and volunteers.
This year, Buddha’s birthday May 12th happened to fall on the second Sunday of May, which was Mother’s Day. Chan Meditation Center held a series of events to celebrate this special day.

On the morning of 2 June 2013, Venerable Guo Dong, Abbot President of Dharma Drum Mountain, gave a Dharma Lecture on “Realize Freedom of Mind”, which was followed by a Refuge Taking ceremony at Dharma Drum Mountain Vancouver Center. Four hundred people, including volunteers, attended this significant yearly event.

Immediately after the disastrous Hurricane Sandy hit the eastern states of United States on October 29th, 2012, DDMBA North America Charitable Foundation initiated caring efforts through fund-raising activity.
For the event this year, the weather was very auspicious, a sunny Sunday morning in upper North Shore, Sydney. Family and friends gathered for this special event, numbers doubled from last year with about 30 people in attendance.
Has it been four years already since Master Sheng Yen (Shifu) crossed over to the other shore? Yes, it has, but only if one stops to think about it, for his daily presence is still strongly felt by all those who have benefitted from his compassion and wisdom. For such people, Shifu is still with us.
