Thousands take refuge to become faithful Buddhists

On the morning of 19 April 2009, the Nung Chan Monastery hosted a group Refuge-taking Ceremony. Close to 1500 attendees followed the directions of the Abbot, Venerable Guo Dong, to take refuge in the Three Jewels and vow to uphold the five precepts to become compassionate and faithful Buddhists.

"Mind at peace, life at peace - you are empowered." The Abbot encouraged participants to practice the power of goodness at any place, any time. This power could manifest in many ways, and could simply be a virtuous thought or through kind words.

Nung Chan Monatery held various activities including Chan meditation and a Welcoming Exhibition to help these new pupils gain a better understanding of the Three Jewels as well as the idea of "protecting the spiritual environment”.

Participants were guided to learn the wisdom and compassion of the Buddhas when managing difficulties in life in order to cultivate a calm and peaceful mind, whilst acting selflessly to maintain a peaceful life.
