The Most Venerable Master Sheng Yen lectures on the Six Ethics of the Mind at National Defense University

On the afternoon of 21 October 2008, the Most Venerable Master Sheng Yen lectured on the Six Ethics of the Mind, the moral values that have been actively promoted by the Master and Dharma Drum Mountain (DDM) in society for peace and harmony, at the National Defense University by invitation of the University.

The Master received warm greetings from the Minister of the Ministry of National Defense, Gen. Chen Chao-Min, the President of National Defense University, Gen. Tseng Jing-Ling, and from approximately 400 high-ranking officers in the lecture hall.

In the one-and-a-half hour lecture, the Master explained the qualities and meanings of each of the Six Ethics of the Mind ─ Family Ethics, Living Ethics, School Ethics, Environmental Ethics, Workplace Ethics and Ethics between Ethnic Groups.

The Master also pinpointed that in today's society, chaos in all its manifestations springs from a lack of ethical and moral standards in interpersonal relationships among all walks of life.

"To develop correct concepts of morality we must start from ourselves. We should dedicate or contribute ourselves to others and to the society ─ like the popular terms "compassion" or "benevolence" in Buddhism today ─ so that those who interact with us attain peace, and gain benefit and help."

Venerable Master Sheng Yen encouraged everyone to cherish life and learn to let go of all vexations and arrogant ego in the mind. Moreover, learn to listen patiently and be compassionate to those who are in need, as well as approach the wisdom of the Dharma. Peace would then naturally arise and be restored in one's mind and in society.
