DDBC and Inventec signs Cooperative Agreement for electronic dictionary
A cooperative agreement was signed on 10 June 2008 between Dharma Drum Buddhist College (DDBC) and Inventec, one of Taiwan's leading electronic and computer manufacturing companies at DDBC International Conference Room.
The aim of this agreement is to develop the first professional electronic dictionary in Buddhism. Both parties are confident that the success of this joint effort will benefit Buddhist scholars and general practitioners alike. It has received Dharma Drum Mountain (DDM) Abbot President, Venerable Guo Dong's blessings.
Venerable Guo Dong thanked Dr Kuo-i Yeh, President of Inventec, who devoted his time to promote Buddhism and donated 12,000 sets of "Dr. eye", a professional translation software; and recognised Dr Yeh's generosity dedication in advancing the scholastic development of Buddhism through his various innovations.
"Dr. eye" will be used to translate and rationalize 3602 Buddhist sutras owned by DDBC and over 100 million Buddhist vocabulary terms into an electronic dictionary software with the potential to assist both professional and novice practitioners in their Buddhist studies. From September 2008, the electronic dictionary will become available for free download on the Inventec website.
Venerable Hui Min, President of DDBC, said the aim of this non-profit development is to serve the followers of Buddhism by professionally documenting a comprehensive list of Buddhist vocabulary. He said ultimately this software will offer users enunciation and thesaurus functionalities for various terms and phrases, in addition to English translation from Tibetan, Pali and possibly other languages.
