DDM Extends Compassionate Care to Victims of Snow Storms in China
On 25 February 2008, the Dharma Drum Mountain Social Welfare and Charity Foundation organized a relief team to Guangxi Province to provide a total of 42 tons of relief material as a form of humanitarian assistance to the victims of this snow-stricken area. The team included Guan-Yu Huang, Jian-Hsin Chen, Feng-Zhi Sheu, Zhi-Gang Shang and Sheng Wu.
In addition to material aid, the relief team also conveyed the warmest regards of Venerable Master Sheng Yen, founder of Dharma Drum Mountain (DDM), and Venerable Guo Dong, Abbot President of DDM, to the victims; sincerely hoping that those who suffered from these recent snowstorms can overcome their unhappiness and resume their normal life to face future challenges with courage and hope.
According to China's Xinhua News, the severe snowstorms that hit central and southern parts of China since 10 January has cost the economy an estimated 111.1 billion yuan (approximately 15.4 billion US dollars) and left heavy casualties, particularly in the more isolated rural areas.
Approximately 1,640 households in the remote regions of the autonomous cities of Guilin and Liuzhou in Guangxi Province benefited from the humanitarian relief of DDM. Each household received 20 kilograms of rice, 5 kilograms of noodles, 5 kilograms of cooking oil, and a 4-kilogram cotton quilt as part of the snow relief.
