The Great Accomplishment of CBETA’s Chinese Electronic Tripitaka Collection Version 2007

The Chinese Buddhist Electronic Text Association has achieved a new milestone on the digitalization of Buddhist scriptures.

In order to provide people and Buddhist scholars with better quality and access to profound Buddhist teachings, on 10 March 2007, the Chinese Buddhist Electronic Text Association (CBETA) hosted a conference at the Light of Wisdom Dharma Hall in Taipei, to release its newest accomplishment, “the CBETA Chinese Electronic Tripitaka Collection Version 2007” as well as celebrate its ninth anniversary.

The conference was presided over by Venerable Hui Min, the Rector of Dharma Drum Mountain Sangha Community and the Director of CBETA. Almost 100 Buddhist scholars attended this special celebration, including Professors from National Taiwan University, Zhou Bocan, Tokyo University, Wei Sian and Fo Guang University, You Xiangzhou. Other Venerable Fashis, such as Venerable Hou Guan from the Light of Wisdom Dharma Hall and Venerable Guo Xing from Dharma Drum Mountain were also in attendance.

At the conference Venerable Hui Min introduced the CBETA Chinese Electronic Tripitaka Collection Version 2007 which contains more than 150 million Chinese characters in XML format of the Taisho Tripitaka Vol.1-55&85 and Shinsan Zokuzokyo (Xuzangjing) Vol.1-88, covering nearly 80% of Buddhist sutras. According to Venerable Hui Min, “The CBETA Chinese Electronic Tripitaka Collection Version 2007 can be looked upon as the ‘Buddhist Google’ for Buddhist sutras studies”.

Since its foundation on 15 February 1998, CBETA has been dedicating itself to the digitalization of Buddhist scriptures. Its purpose is to provide Buddhist scholars and people who are interested in Buddhist teachings handy and free resources for Buddhist studies.

Strongly supported by the Yinshun Foundation of North America, Bodhi Foundation in Taipei and The Seedland Education Foundation in Taipei, and in co-operation with the Chung-Hwa Institute of Buddhist Studies, CBETA has successfully come to its ninth year.
