DDM hosts the 2010 Award for Caring Life for the promotion of altruism
On the 10th of September 2010, the Dharma Drum Humanities & Social Improvement Foundation hosted The 2010 Award for Caring Life at the International Convention Hall in the National Taiwan Science Education Centre in Taipei.
Taiwan’s President Ying-Jeou Ma was the special guest who attended the event, presenting the honours to the award winners, in addition to recognizing DDM’s long-term contributions to the prevention of suicide and the promotion of altruism in society.
In his opening speech, Abbot President Venerable Guo Dong said that every individual actually plays various roles in their life simultaneously. He went on to say that the meaning of life lies in the fulfillment of duties in your life and also the resolution of the problems one faces in life.
With this in mind, one therefore must maintain a positive mindset, always guided by right mindfulness and reflection in order to discover the light during times of adversity. Then life will be brighter and there is greater hope and less despair for the individual.
Premier of Executive Yuan , Mr. Den-Yih Wu, who also attended the event , expressed his sincere and deep gratitude to the award winners. Premier Wu said that although the ‘88 Flood had caused major destruction with severe casualties, the volunteers’ great vows and compassion as shown in all their activities greatly demonstrated that loving-kindness and selflessness was evident everywhere.
Truly the volunteers put the well-being and happiness of the victims ahead of themselves and this event was to honour their efforts. The winners were dedicated individuals who have been working long-term on the prevention of suicide and other related life-caring activities.
By hosting this award, DDM is hoping that people will become more aware and understand the importance of preventing suicide in society. In addition, it also hopes more people will recognize that human life is precious and join in the efforts to help cherish it.
