Celebrating Bamboo Shoot Festival with Storm-Afflicted Villagers in Jiaxian

It was a rare occasion for Dharma Drum Mountain Social Welfare and Charity Foundation (DDMSWCF) to celebrate the Bamboo Shoot Festival with Jiaxian’s storm-afflicted villagers, Kaohsiung County, on 26 and 27 June 2010.

While the festivities were hosted mainly by Jiaxian Township Office and Jiaxian Primary School, it was also the celebration for the re-opening of the Jiaxian Bridge, which was washed away by the flood in September 2008 by Typhoon Sinlaku.

Volunteers and staff of DDMSWCF’s Peace of Mind Relief Station in Jiaxian were also invited in honor of their long-term relief works for storm-afflicted villagers of Jiaxian Township.

In addition to the festivities, DDMSWCF also exhibited various achievements from the relief operations at Jiaxian Primary School, giving visitors an insight into DDMSWCF’s services and endeavors. Moreover, volunteers had specially prepared various games for children to help sow the seed of environmentalism in their minds.

The damage to Jianxian Township of Kaohsiung County was very severe when Typhoon Morakot struck southern Taiwan on 8 August, 2009 (also known as the 88 Flood) which caused immense economic loss to the region.
