What is the view of women’s place in Buddhism?

When examining gender issues during the Buddha’s time, we should look at the fundamental aspect of equality in Buddhism. For instance, there was no gender distinction in the status of arhats. In so far as the practice of Buddhadharma is concerned, there was gender equality among Buddhist practitioners. Furthermore, Buddha proclaimed that all sentient beings have the potential to attain buddhahood

Pain is a physical phenomenon experienced with our nerves. Suffering is a mental phenomenon, a psychological thing. Pain is not tantamount to suffering, yet suffering can often cause pain. Our suffering comes from our craving and attachment, and from our unwilling or reluctant to give up or let go. If we are able to readily take up responsibilities, let go of any attachment, and face reality and deal with the situation at hand without running away from it, then we won't feel suffering in our minds.

The difference between Buddhism and Christianity is that Buddha is a believer’s “teacher”, while God is the believer’s “master”.

Master Sheng Yen said, “Nung Chan Monastery is the origin of Dharma Drum Mountain. With narrations and dialogues and refined painting style, the series illustrates the early history of DDM. Its first episode traces back to 1965 when Venerable Master Dong Chu bought a plot of farmland in the Guandu Plain and started the practice of Chan in farming by modeling Chan master Baizhang in the Tang Dynasty.

In 1993, Master Sheng Yen transmitted the Dharma to Dr. John Crook, a British national, who vowed to practice the Master’s teachings and sow the seeds of Chinese Buddhism in Europe. Practitioners in Poland invited Master Sheng Yen to give guidance on Chan practice for the first time in 1997. Twenty years on, these Polish disciples have continued to practice diligently under the guidance of Ven. Chi Chern and Dr. Simon Child, constantly honing their faith in Chan teachings.
