20th anniversary of DDM Malaysia:
Repaying kindness, Action, and Vow

On Nov. 10, after five years of construction, the new building of Dharma Drum Mountain Buddhist Centre Malaysia was inaugurated. Themed as “20th anniversary: Repaying kindness, Action, and Vow”, the inauguration ceremony and refuge-taking ceremony were held at the same time.

Hosted by DDM Abbot President Venerable Guo Huei (果暉法師), the ceremony was attended by approximately 1,000 followers as well as representatives of various Buddhist groups. These included many guests of honor such as DDM Vice Abbot Venerable Guo Pin (果品法師), Acting President of Malaysian Buddhist Association Venerable Chan Liang (禪亮法師), Abbess of Fo Guang Shan Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia Venerable Jue Chen (覺誠法師), Abbot of Sau Seng Lum Buddhist Temple Venerable Chang Heng (長恆法師), and Vice President of DDM Association of Dharma Supporters Mr. Chou Wen-chin (周文進), the first convener of DDM Malaysia, Ms. Lin Xiao Yun (林孝雲), and leaders of Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia as well as of Nalanda Buddhist Society. With their blessing for Dharma Drum Mountain, the ceremony was filled with great solemnity.

After pulling down the screen in the consecration ceremony, Venerable Guo Huei expressed his appreciation for Malaysia’s openness and tolerance to all religions and beliefs, in that he reminisced about late Master Sheng Yen’s words: “We simply provide the public with the wisdom and compassion of the Dharma, making an effort to alter people’s religious belief is pointless. As a Buddhist, what we truly need is to learn how to benefit the sentient beings.”

In order to help all sentient beings “escape from suffering and attain happiness”, Venerable Guo Huei exhorted all participants to actively promote Buddhist teachings. Through his brief introduction to DDM’s vision of four kinds of "protecting the environment" - “protecting the Spiritual environment, protecting the Natural Environment, protecting the Living Environment, and protecting the Social Environment”, Venerable Guo Huei expounded how DDM makes an effort to popularize Chinese Chan Buddhism so as to purify people’s mind and the society.

In this newly-built center, nearly 300 participants took refuge of the Three Jewels in that afternoon. Venerable Guo Huei elucidated and imparted refuge taking and five precepts for all refuge-takers, and congratulated them on being official Buddhists ever after.

According to Dharma Drum Mountain Buddhist Centre Malaysia, their mission has been to promote orthodox Buddhism and useful methods to practice dharma ever since 2001. In Malaysia, an ethnically and religiously diverse country, they actively engaged in interfaith events such as giving blessings, and facilitated exchanges of ideas among Buddhist groups. They also promoted DDM’s vision “to uplift the character of humanity, and build a pure land on earth” to all levels of schools, to benefit teachers, youngsters, and people of all ages through Chan Practice, and Buddhist teachings. It is hoped that all people can apply Buddhist teachings in their daily lives, so DDM can serve to purify people’s mind as well as the society as a whole.
