DDM expresses warmest thanks for the life of Dr. C.T. Shen

The Buddhist elder, Dr. C. T. Shen, successful entrepreneur in the United States’ shipping industry and Vice President of the Buddhist Association of the United States (BAUS), passed away on 27 November 2007 at the age of 95 years.

Dr. Shen had a great impact on the development of Buddhism in the United States. In 1964, he established the Buddhist Association of the United States (BAUS) and helped to establish both the Great Enlightenment Temple in New York City and the Chuang Yen Monastery in upper New York State. In both Chinese and English, he skillfully explained Buddhism in modern scientific terms to allow all people, Chinese and non-Chinese, to embrace the Buddha’s teachings.

The Abbot President of Dharma Drum Mountain, Venerable Guo Dong, on behalf of Venerable Master Sheng Yen, arrived at the Chuang Yen Monastery in New York on 2 December 2007 from Taiwan to participate in the Memorial Service for Dr. Shen.

The service was presided over by the President of BAUS, Venerable Ren Jun and attended by honorary Buddhist venerables across the United States. The Abbot President expressed Venerable Master Sheng Yen’s appreciation and fullest gratitude for the support of Dr. Shen, who had given him to achieve his doctoral degree in Japan, and Dr. Shen’s noble contribution to Dharma Drum Mountain’s promotion of the Dharma in the United States.
