On the morning of December 15th, Sheng Yen Education Foundation warmly welcomed its long anticipated guest – Gilbert Gutierrez, one of the Western Dharma heirs of late Master Sheng Yen, to share his wisdom with the public. The lecture, “How to Meditate with Right View,” given a day after he finished leading a bilingual Silent Illumination retreat at DDM World Center for Buddhist Education, attracted nearly 500 people attending in person or via live broadcast, receiving enthusiastic applause and spontaneous laughter from the audience.

Nung Chan Monastery will not be open on Dec. 21th (Sat.)

Nung Chan Monastery will not be open from Dec. 21th to Dec. 28th due to “7-day Retreat of Amitabha Buddha Recitation “

As Nung Chan Monastery will hold “7-day Retreat of Amitabha Buddha Recitation” on Dec. 21th, 2019, the campus will NOT be open to the general public during the above mentioned period.

During this period of time, the whole area of Nung Chan Monastery will be reserved for “7-day Retreat of Amitabha Buddha Recitation” only; sightseeing or photographing will be declined.

The campus will be open once the event is ended after Dec. 29th.

Audrey Kitagawa (奧黛麗.北川), chair of the Programmatic Areas Standing Committee of the Parliament of the World’s Religions, the oldest interfaith organization, together with three other representatives, came from New York to visit the Dharma Drum Mountain complex on Oct 7 for a special report, in particular about DDM’s vision. At the interview, DDM Abbot President Ven. Guo Huei (果暉法師) gave her Master Sheng Yen’s works as a gift. Kitagawa also organized a panel discussion with DDM’s representatives Ven. Guo Chan (果禪法師), Ven. Chang Shen (常諗法師) and Prof. Deng Wei Jen (鄧偉仁), Director of the Department of Buddhist Studies, Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts, on the hotly debated issues surrounding climate change, ethnic harmony and social justice.

Starting with the Mind as the Ultimate Solution

To advocate the attitude of gratitude to the earth and respect for all life species, DDM held the first Spiritual Environmentalism on the Regeneration of Agriculture in the Era of Climate Change conference at Chang Yung-Fa Foundation Evergreen International Convention Center on October 26 and 27.

In memory of the10th anniversary of late Master Sheng Yen’s passing

On Sept 20th and 21st, the “Roundtable Forum on Chinese Chan Buddhism Studies and Broadening Practices of Education” was held by Chung-Hwa Institute of Buddhist Studies, CHIBS, gathering dozens of prominent youth scholars from the past two “Youth Forum” and alumni from CHIBS, as well as the monastics from DDM Sangha. Nineteen academic papers in total and one keynote speech were presented.

The Awakening Camp aims to let participants experience the monastic life, including self awareness in Buddhism, Buddhist chanting, noble deeds of eminent monks, Buddhist precepts, meditation practice, work practice, etc. Through this experience, it helps them to realize the meaning of their existence in this world and to contemplate the direction of their life. In turn, it widens the horizon of their perspective.

DDM World Center for Buddhist Education will not be open from Nov. 23 to Nov. 30 due to
7-day Great Compassion Water and Land Service.
It started sixteen years ago when late Master Sheng Yen went to Moscow to propagate the Dharma, a Dharma affinity was formed. Sixteen years later, an application for ash burial from 7500 kilometers away was finally fulfilled during Mid-Autumn Festival through the kind efforts of many. It is a lesson on life education; a reunion with the Dharma.

As Nung Chan Monastery will hold “Chan Run Event” on Nov. 9th, 2019, the campus will NOT be open to the general public during the above mentioned period.
