About
Medicine Buddha Hall
The Buddhist services at the
Medicine Buddha Hall
include chanting the
Medicine Buddha Sutra (藥師經)
, reciting the
Medicine Buddha Mantra (藥師咒)
, and reciting the sacred name of this Buddha.
The Medicine Buddha Sutra, translated by
Master Xuan Zang of the Tang Dynasty (唐朝玄奘大師)
, describes the twelve great vows made by the Medicine Buddha while treading the Bodhisattva path in his previous life. His vows concern not only the equanimity of all beings and their eventual attainment of supreme Buddhahood, but also various aspects of their current life, such as physical challenges , illness, medical treatments, food and nourishment, climate, society, nation, all of which relate to the idea of building a Pure Land on Earth in quite a realistic manner.
The Medicine Buddha Sutra states that those who recite it, respectfully make offerings, and chant the Medicine Buddha’s name, will gain benefits in this life. This includes warding off misfortunes and sufferings, as well as enjoying blessings, longevity, good health, peace, and having one’s wishes fulfilled.
On the other hand, reciting the Medicine Buddha Mantra with utmost sincerity helps to eliminate one’s illnesses and sufferings, while increasing one’s longevity.
For those who attend the Medicine Buddha Dharma Services, in addition to earnestly praying for the protection from the Medicine Buddha, it is more important to emulate his great compassionate vows to benefit all beings, so as to resonate with the original vows and merits of the Medicine Buddha.
